Abstract
Background
: Recurrent pregnancy loss is a challenging clinical condition with significant emotional and physical burden. Assisted reproductive technologies, such as ICSI, have provided new options for these patients, but the long-term pregnancy outcomes remain unclear.
Objective: To evaluate pregnancy outcomes in women with a history of recurrent abortions who achieved successful pregnancy through intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).
Methods: This retrospective cohort study included women with a history of ≥3 consecutive spontaneous abortions who underwent ICSI treatment and achieved a viable pregnancy. Pregnancy outcomes, including live birth rate, preterm birth, low birth weight, and pregnancy complications, were analyzed and compared to a control group of women without a history of recurrent abortions who also underwent successful ICSI.
Results: A total of 128 women with recurrent abortions and 218 controls were included. The live birth rate was similar between the two groups (72.7% vs. 76.1%, p=0.45). However, women with a history of recurrent abortions had a significantly higher rate of preterm birth (<37 weeks, 26.6% vs. 12.8%, p=0.002) and low birth weight (<2500g, 21.9% vs. 9.6%, p=0.002) compared to controls. Rates of pregnancy-induced hypertension, gestational diabetes, and other complications were also higher in the recurrent abortion group.
Conclusion: Despite achieving successful pregnancy through ICSI, women with a history of recurrent abortions remain at increased risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preterm birth and low birth weight. Close monitoring and management of these high-risk pregnancies is warranted.
